the news that she had chosen someone that wasn't him had broken his heart, of course. but there was no way that he could be angry or harbor a grudge when he saw how happy she was with him. he would always be happy to have her and Suzuya as friends, seeing as they were some of the first people that had accepted him. time would heal all wounds after all, and he knew that pining for her would just be painful for every party involved.
what time also brought was an apparent growing friendship with Kanata after coming back to Japan from his studies overseas. while they obviously hadn't gotten off on the right foot in their weak excuse for a friendship, having a mutual friend in Tsukiko had brought them into civil, and eventually good terms. what he definitely couldn't foresee was him beginning to have feelings towards him that were similar to the ones he had felt for her. how he felt for Kanata may not have been as strong as how he felt for Tsukiko, but it wasn't something he could deny. there was nothing to do but confess and see if he felt the same - keeping feelings to himself was never his thing.
so when they're out having lunch one day, he speaks up. ]

at least he has Yoh. whom against his better judgement...he likes him. which that sure is something considering he literally hated his guts not too, too long ago. and then slowly but surely, he was on the same level as Suzuya. and then he found himself treating Yoh a little different than Suzuya. Suzuya was...hmm. special to him. but Yoh was a different sort of special. Kanata could comfortably fall all over Yoh, tickle Yoh, feed Yoh (more like seeing how full he could stuff his mouth before he spit it all out all over the place). he definitely didn't do all of those things with Suzuya. partially because he was afraid of Suzuya but also because being with Yoh just felt. different.
the sudden lunchtime question caused him to choke on the food in his own mouth. it's just kind of awkward and embarrassing. ]
